Instructions for Making Your Own Healing Salve
You can make your own skin soother, lip balm, or a healthy substitute for petroleum jelly with a few simple ingredients. I prefer to never place petroleum products on the skin. THE BASIC RECIPE Warm two ounces of oil on a low heat and add a couple of ounces of beeswax (grated) to the oil to make a basic salve. Stir this until completely melted and blended with the oil. Pour your mixture into a small, shallow glass jar. When it cools, it will be solid. Mixing small amounts allows you to use the salve without needing to add preservatives for long term storage. MAKE IT YOUR OWN Select herbs with which to infuse your oil and use that oil in your salve. I prefer to infuse a blend of coconut and olive oil. Because coconut oil is solid below 76 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), a salve made with this combination will require less beeswax to solidify. Coconut oil also contributes anti-microbial properties to your blend. Once the beeswax has been blended with your oils, you have the option of adding other ingredients. * Your skin benefits greatly from the addition of Vitamin E oil. Squeeze the contents of a pierced capsule into the beeswax and oil. * A half teaspoon of raw honey is another ingredient that both soothes the skin and acts as a preservative. * Select your favorite fragrance and add a few drops of essential oil. Just be sure to carefully read labels as some essential oils are not intended for use in applications on the skin.** * Add about 7 drops of tea tree oil to act as a preservative. Know the strength your tea tree oil. The strength varies from one product to another and can cause skin irritation in potent doses, so use caution.** Really, it is as simple as that. Discover the blends that please you most. Small baby food jars can be filled and decorated as thoughtful gifts. Add your own special flavoring for lip balm or special herbs to relieve aches and pains. My preference is to limit herbal blends to two to four selected herbs. I choose herbs with properties that complement each other. KAY’S SKIN AND MUSCLE ACHE SALVE Infuse olive oil (extra virgin) using the heat method and dried goldenrod flowers & leaves. For 3 to 4 hours (or longer) heat the oil and herbs gently in a double boiler. Use about two cups of oil and one cup herbs. When removed from heat, strain herbs, retaining the oil in a glass quart jar and add about 1 more cup of coconut oil, blending well. For another 3 or 4 hours (or more) return this blended oil to the double boiler along with a cup of plantain and another cup of goldenrod. Strain your oil again, discarding the herbs. In each of your small jars, place two Tbsp. beeswax (if you are using a jelly jar, make those large Tbsps), ½ tsp raw honey and one or two capsules of vitamin E oil (break open the capsules and squeeze the contents into the container). Pour the infused oil into the salve jar and stir until the wax is melted and the ingredients are fully incorporated. If the oil is not hot enough to melt your wax, place the lid firmly on your jar and set it into the hot water in the bottom of your double boiler for a gentle warming. When blended, set the jars aside to cool. This should set up to a nice salve texture. Plantain has styptic properties which mean it helps stop bleeding, eases inflammation, itching and pain. An antiseptic, Goldenrod also helps soothe sore muscles, strains and sprains. This salve has a very smooth texture and penetrates nicely. The basic ingredients mean it could be safely used on a baby’s bottom, chapped lips, scrapes, rashes and blemishes. Apply it liberally and repeatedly to tired, sore muscles. ADJUSTING THE CONSISTENCY If you find your salve is too hard, it can be warmed and more oil added, mixed and cooled to re-set. If you find your salve to be too soft, re-warm it adding more beeswax. Check the consistency after it has cooled to room temperature.
