FOOD STORAGE INFO
Do you have easy to understand information and statistics on cattle farming and milk.. say about 10 cows?

Got some info. but am sure Yahoo answers will provide more and better info. than what I have. The food for cows, the milk and various products, storage, gestation period, care and health of cows, etc.,

Thanks all
Or even a reference to a good website

First off, nobody has 10 cows. Even small farms in the US have 50 cows. Also – cows are only the mature females. All male cattle are bulls (if fertile) or steers (if castrated). Immature females are heifers. Calves are what the young are known as for the first year of life. Calves can be bulls, steers, or heifers. All of these groups have different dietary and health care needs.

I’ll do my best to be brief.

Simple answer to gestation period: 9 mos – just like people Most dairy farms use artificial insemination for safety (no bulls on the premises) and for improving their herd’s genetics.

Diary nutrition is a complicated subject. There are no good simple websites to explain it. Cows are herbivores, and therefore eat plant products. They eat grasses (like alfalfa), grains (like corn and oats), and protein sources (like soy beans). There are also many manufactured dietary mineral and vitamin supplements that are also given to cows if some of their needs aren’t being met.

I would think finding information about dairy products would be fairly simple. Try Dean Foods website for a list of what they sell. www.deanfoods.com

By storage, do you mean housing for the animals? All cows need shelter and unlimited access to water. (It takes a lot of water to lactate.) Generally, you also want them to have constant access to some sort of grass – either grass while grazing or baled hay or silage/baleage during the winter. They also need to have a dry, clean place to lie down. Many farmers use straw or corn stalks for bedding, but many also use shredded paper, wood shavings, or sand.

Generally, cows can live to be over 10 years old unless the farmer decides to cull them from the herd if they’re no longer profitable. The main health concerns are hoof care, vaccinations, pneumonia, infertility, mastitis, calving problems, ketosis, and milk fever.
