What is silo sealing? Why is it important to have a silo sealed?

Silos are storage structures for bulk materials. They are crucial for agriculture because they store either grain, food products or fermented feed, also known as silage. Silos are also utilized for the bulk storage of sawdust, carbon black, coal, cement and wood chips. There are many kinds of silos, but only three are the most often used: tower silos, bunker silos and bag silos.

Silos which store grain and other food products are often faced with a major threat: weevils. Weevils, which is a kind of beetle, have a reputation for damaging crops. Weevils are usually found in dry foods such as nuts, seeds, cereal and grain products. In fact, there is a grain or wheat weevil which specifically targets stored grain. These creatures have the capacity to get inside silos and damage all the grain stored there. This is the reason silos need to be sealed. The attack of destructive weevils is what silo sealing is trying to avoid.

Silo sealing is essentially the process of modifying existing silos to prevent the air and gas from escaping or going into the structure after all the grain has been loaded and the silo has been closed. Silo sealing makes the silos controlled or gas-tight, which means that the structure is fully contained; nothing can enter the silo after it has been sealed. As a result, silo sealing functions to control and eliminate insects like weevils from the stored grain. The silo sealing system was originally developed in Australia in 1983, and has since been designed in other countries as well. Australia and other countries which has silo sealing capabilities benefit from it because they increase their amount of grain by preventing it from being damaged by weevils.
