CANNED FOOD STORAGE RACKS

amtrak train overhead storage?
so I am taking the train i have traveled once on it before.
I had my duffel bag and large purse last time to haul everything I needed.
this time I have a backpack and I am wondering if my suitcase which is 28 x 18x 8 will fit in the over head rack. I am traveling on a empire builder train. I only had some trouble stuffing my medium sized duffel bag in the overhead last time. I can’t afford the 10 dollars for checked baggage. its either bags or food. it’s a 36 hour train trip. so i am already bringing small snacks in my backpack.
if it comes down to it I will just bring my duffel again. I am going to be out of town for a month or more visiting family.
and also I am planning on getting a sleep car on the way back. does it cost extra to bring a guitar? could I just keep it in my sleeper with me?
The Amtrak Superliners on the Empire Builder and most western trains have large overhead racks that would likely accommodate your suitcase. There are also larger luggage racks downstairs near the lower level vestibule doors. Your guitar would be safer upstairs above your seat. Remember the ride is softer and the noise is less in the middle of the car rather than near the upstairs end doors. Remember to bring a blanket or have a warm coat.
The Empire Builder can get busy between Chicago and Minneapolis and between Seattle and Spokane. When you check in, ask the station staff or conductor to check their manifest to see how full the train will be. If you are boarding at Chicago, get your running shoes on and be at the front of the queue when the gates open.
There is room in the smallest accommodation (the roomette) for your guitar. If you are traveling by yourself, you could lower the upper bunk partially and place the guitar in the berth. If you put it up there, tell your attendant and make sure it is visible so he/she won’t slam the berth up to close it.
If you are upgrading to a sleeper on the way back, I do not think there would be a checked baggage surcharge. If you get the Sleeper on the way back, you might want to consider shipping other heavy items (like books) back with you from home because it is so cheap. Of course not all stations have checked baggage.
If you have the time you might want to consider spending 24 hours at the Izaak Walton Inn going and the Belton Chalets returning, both trackside in Glacier Park. It may be cheaper.
If your train attendant does a good job, give them a tip and let them know you appreciate their efforts.
I used to be an Amtrak Train Attendant and the Empire Builder was one of my favorite trips. America can be so beautiful and desolate without a nearby Interstate.
