FOOD STORAGE MOTHS

FOOD STORAGE MOTHS
how to you keep a food storage room/cellar dry?

I live in an old cabin with an addition. The older downstairs area has a brick root cellar or food storage area, im not sure, its dark and the temp ranges from 35-70 during the year. There are no leaks but it is not air tight because mice get in there.

I started using the room as a storage room for canned food. I did this about 3-4 years ago and check on it from time to time.

Today I noticed that the cans were starting to rust and the temperature was 45 degrees.

what can I do, if anything to dry out the room without using a electric dehumitifier?

Or is there anything I can do?

Do moth balls help?

I could move the cans inside in the loft but the temp gets above 80 in the summer.
yes im a guy and yes im dumb. but hey, im trying
its got a dirt floor and built with bricks 100 years ago. Electricity might be a problem in there, could cut a hole for ventalation.

It might have been used for a root cellar and probably perfect for a wine cellar (maybe to warm)

Root cellars are meant to be very humid and are not meant to store canned goods which need it a bit warmer and a lot drier. Canned goods should be stored in your pantry if you don’t want them to rust and pop their lids.

But if you want to use the root cellar and not use a dehumidifier you probably need to do some serious foundation work and perhaps drain tiles to divert water wanting to come through your foundation. This will cost a lot more than dehumidifiers or moving the jars to a better storage area.

Moth balls will do nothing except make the area toxic

I keep my canned goods in my pantry which gets above 80F in summer and have zero problems with heat harming the contents. I do keep them in dark cupboards.
